"When we return to the United States, we will continue with physical therapy. But in the near future, we will definitely come back to China — to finish the journey we never completed." — Jeff & Robin, on the eve of their discharge from Jiahui International Hospital
This was how Jeff and Robin, an American couple in their seventies, said goodbye before leaving Jiahui International Hospital. Their original trip to China was never meant to be a medical journey. Their "connection" with Jiahui was born purely out of an accident.
The couple, from Seattle, arrived in China for the first time in March of this year, planning a two-week tour of the country's magnificent western region. They saw giant pandas in Chengdu and gazed up at snow-capped mountains in Shangri-La. There was one more special wish on their itinerary — visiting the Leshan Giant Buddha. For forty years, this couple has been passionate about seeking out giant Buddha statues around the world, making Leshan a must-see destination.
Then, a sudden accident overturned everything. As they were exiting Kunming Airport, Robin unfortunately tripped on a curb and was immediately unable to stand.
A journey of exploration had, in an instant, become a medical crisis.

A Race Against Time: Decisions and Treatment
Shortly after the fall, Robin was taken to a local hospital where doctors quickly arranged X-rays. The results showed multiple fractures. While the local medical staff were kind and could have provided treatment, Jeff — weighing factors such as communication, medical resources, and follow-up rehabilitation — decided to seek an alternative after careful consideration.
Had the injury been minor, returning to the United States for treatment would have been their first choice. But Robin's condition could not wait — receiving treatment in China had become the only option. Jeff swiftly consulted friends back home, their family doctor, and even turned to AI for help, ultimately zeroing in on Jiahui International Hospital in Shanghai.
Through a door-to-door air ambulance service, Robin was smoothly transferred to the Jiahui International Hospital Emergency Center on the afternoon of March 25.
"While we were still in Kunming, we had already started coordinating with the Jiahui team. By the time we arrived, everything was already arranged in perfect order." — Jeff recalls
Given Robin's condition, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Zhan Ce (& #25112;策) decided to conduct her initial consultation right at the bedside in the emergency room. The diagnosis was soon confirmed: a comminuted fracture of the proximal femur. Considering the high risk of complications that elderly patients face after prolonged bed rest — including deep vein thrombosis, pressure sores, and hypostatic pneumonia — the orthopedic team, after ruling out surgical contraindications, recommended proceeding with surgery as soon as possible.
The Jiahui orthopedic team, led by Dr. Zhan Ce, performed a successful 2.5-hour surgery for Robin's proximal femoral fracture.
Earlier, although Jeff had chosen Jiahui, he had no prior experience with surgery in China and naturally harbored concerns. However, after several rounds of professional consultation with the medical team, his doubts were addressed one by one. Soon after, Dr. Zhan Ce, serving as lead surgeon with the full orthopedic team's support, performed a 2.5-hour surgery for Robin.
The following morning, under the guidance of rehabilitation therapists Chen Ling (& #38472;羔) and Hu Fenxiang (& #32993;粉香), Robin began a series of post-operative rehabilitation exercises for the affected limb. These included bed-level lower-limb mobility exercises, independent bed transfer training, right lower-limb weight-bearing with walker assistance, and muscle activation exercises.
Additionally, for Robin's pre-existing osteoporosis, endocrinologist Dr. Pang Can (& #24222;璀) provided an ongoing osteoporosis management plan and medication recommendations during her hospital stay.
Finally, the Jiahui multidisciplinary team developed a comprehensive post-operative rehabilitation plan for Robin, ensuring she could continue her recovery according to a structured regimen after returning to the United States.
"With Chinese Doctors Performing the Surgery, We Were Completely at Ease"
Although Jeff and Robin never imagined their first trip to China would end this way, the unexpected turn of events gave them an entirely new appreciation for Jiahui — and for Shanghai's international-standard medical care and services.
Hospitals in the United States are often noisy, but the couple found Jiahui to have a calm and tranquil atmosphere. Beyond that, Jiahui's outstanding medical team and seamless English-language communication throughout the entire process left a deep impression.
Jeff made a particularly memorable remark:
"Many Americans hold a positive 'stereotype' of Chinese people — that they are intelligent, hardworking, and conscientious. So having Chinese doctors perform this surgery gave us complete peace of mind. Honestly, even back in the United States, we would want Chinese doctors to handle our surgeries." — Jeff
As the couple expressed with gratitude on their final day:
"When we return to the United States, we will continue with physical therapy. But in the near future, we will definitely come back to China — to finish the journey we never completed."
